I spent over two weeks solo traveling around South East Asia. After hours of research, preparation, and my own experience here are my tips that I hope will get you to finally make your solo trip a reality.
Plan a sharable Itinerary
- Put everything in an updating powerpoint slide (I used Canva) and send it to your friends so that people you trust know where you should be at all times.
- Make sure to share your location with at least five people!
Scope out your location and surroundings
- Know where you are and know how to get out!
Never speak to anyone in singular terms
- (I am going to blah blah blah) always speak in terms of “We” (We are going to blah blah blah)
Don’t stay anywhere secluded i.e don’t stay in a house!
- Airbnb is fine, but always opt for an apartment or hotel. Be sure to pass people in the morning when you leave and night when you return.
Get a local sim
- Make sure you are in an area with good reception.
Arrange drivers before hand
- My recommendation is to use one driver for the entirety of your stay. Get a copy of their ID, car information, and contact information and put that in your sharable slide as well!
Designate days and time for content.
- I love the idea of content creation, but you need to connect with the world around you without the medium of a device.
Know people in that geographical area.
- Solo traveling is all fun and games until there is an emergency and everyone you know is a $1000 flight away. Talk to friends and family, there is bound to be someone in that country or in the surrounding countries that you can rely on.
- On this topic. PLEASE, and I cannot emphasize this enough, get travel insurance. Many countries require it now due to covid, but there is an abundance of issues that could really ruin your trip or even your life. The insurance is not as complicated or as expensive as you’d think, so please get it I beg!
Pre-plan activities arranging for pick up from your accommodation.
- Preplanning trips on official websites like Trip Advisor will allow you to avoid tourist traps and potential safety hazards.
- Bring a small amount of cash to tip workers and ensure that all of your money is not visible.
Wear a protective style
- If you bring a frontal on vacation you are not a serious person.Braids or twists or faux locs or your natural hair, as long as it does not require glue its green!
