Hot take
This book urges us to understand the power of unapologetic female sexuality in a world that seeks to suppress it.
“The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor Jenkins Reid is an incredible book that left me in awe. It takes us into the glamorous world of Hollywood’s golden age, where love, ambition, and hidden truths abound.
Reid’s writing is truly impressive. Her words transport us to a different time, immersing us in the captivating story of Evelyn Hugo, a determined and mysterious Hollywood icon. We witness Evelyn’s journey from her humble beginnings to her rise to stardom, and the author’s storytelling is flawless, capturing the essence of an industry that both fascinates and consumes.
The book’s narrative structure is a triumph. Rather than a straightforward account of Evelyn’s life, Reid cleverly weaves in the stories of her seven husbands. Each husband adds depth to the story, unraveling the mystery behind Evelyn’s glamorous façade. From passionate early romances to complex marriages, the emotional journey keeps us on the edge of our seats.

What sets this novel apart is its exploration of themes that resonate deeply with the human experience. Reid fearlessly delves into love, sexuality, identity, and the sacrifices we make to find personal fulfillment. The book’s honest portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community during a time of prejudice is empowering and moving, shedding light on the challenges faced by those who dared to defy societal norms. Additionally, the book sheds light on the duality of beauty and sex appeal in young women.
On one hand there is “pretty privilege”, Hugo uses her sexuality to get what she desires from men… if we are being honest the real reason she even got a shot at Hollywood was because she was hot and manipulative. What was it that 50 cent said “If your biggest asset is your looks, you gon do some hoe shit…” and it was hoe shit that she did. If you’re offended you have to cut the crap, Evelyn’s go to tactic was sex and lies. While it gained her everything, it also lost her everything. On the other side of the duality of beauty and sex appeal in young women, lies the harsh reality of using that sex appeal and what it does to your psyche. She didn’t feel she had any other choice and in many ways I’d argue she really didn’t.
At the heart of the book is Evelyn Hugo herself, a strong yet vulnerable character who feels incredibly real. Her flaws and imperfections make her relatable, and we can’t help but root for her successes and share in her heartaches. Through her eyes, we see the dark side of fame, the compromises made for success, and the lengths one will go to protect their truth.
“The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is a remarkable novel that leaves a lasting impression. It seamlessly combines glamour and substance, exploring the complexities of the human spirit. Taylor Jenkins Reid has crafted a work of art that captivates, inspires, and challenges us to confront our own desires, fears, and the legacy we wish to leave behind.
